They are by far the worst hosting company. They make it impossible cancel and account, and if you don’t do it correctly they will keep billing you. Think you’ll be ok when your credit card expires don’t worry they will keep billing you and eventually refer you to collections. When you call to speak to a supervisor and tell them to cancel an account you aren’t using anymore and is in collections, they still won’t cancel it. They will however keep sending you an email to an address that no longer is in existence and refer you to their online web form.

  1. tony rocks Says:

I’m there dude. I’ll take it in its entirety.

  2. Craig Wilson Says:

They billed me for a free trial once, which I didn’t use because their control panel sucked.

I ignored their e-mails, and haven’t heard from them since.

  3. skore Says:

    They really do suck.

    1and1 sucks so much

  4. Ken Savage Says:

hahaha I have to laugh Michael for 2 reasons. I wasn’t the only one who got thrown into collections after “cancelling my account” and changing my address and credit card info.

Also I remmeber talking a web design job I had a few years ago that I had to work with the web host for some Sharepoint off-site hosting and they were totally wrong with some of their support. Later I found that the company was 1&1 and again I was given horrible service. The accts payable rep said it took her 2 months of calls and emails to get that account to stop rebilling the company too.

  6. Jeff Libert Says:

I’ve been searching for hosting services and was considering 1&1 hosting, virtual servers and 1 and 1 dedicated servers as sometimes a bigger web hosting provider means better, more efficient service. At this point, since I value Mike’s opinion, and since his experience with 1and1 sucks, I will not be hosting any websites with 1and1 nor using 1 and 1’s virtual or dedicated servers. It looks like a classic scam Mike, though in this case 1&1 would likely profess innocence. However, if you establish a recurring pattern of 1 and 1 ignoring proper requests then there might be grounds for a class-action lawsuit against 1 and 1. I’d sue 1&1 for you if I wasn’t so busy with other litigation. Maybe it’s time to file a complaint with the attorney general about 1and1’s shoddy behavior? Maybe it’s time to report 1 and 1 to the FTC? You just can’t take this lying down.

  7. garrett Says:

hey , what a good place for cheap hosting? im using namecheaps people host (3.95 per month) and they used to be decent but lately they’ve been screwing up alot and wont answer my support emails. I think i want to find someone else.

  8. Ollydolly Says:

yeah I’ve had my problems with it lately - but in the early days they were quite good - whilst I was on holiday and not keeping an eye on my main website, it suddenly took off and way exceeded the bandwidth - first I knew of it was an invoice for a £1000!!! which they had already taken from my Visa - one phonecall and they upped my contract to business level and refunded the grand - thank heavens.

Obviously not enough staff to run the thing properly now.

  9. TallTroll Says:

    Michael,

Why not scrape it yourself? I think you know a few people with the odd scraper script… I’m sure one or more would be happy to help

  10. elomato Says:

haha, got da same probs with 1&1 (1und1) in germany.
    1&1, 1and1, 1und1 sucks!!!

  11. Jonathan Dingman Says:

I signed up with them once, but cancelled within the same week. They are a horrible company, stay away from them at all costs (seriously, even if it costs you money, stay away!)

I recommend LiquidWeb or LayeredTech (for dedicated services), or DreamHost / Site5 for shared hosting.

  12. Tom Says:

I was using them, we got popular, then they started moving our servers around. I am in the last stage on untangling myself and truly believe that 1and1 sucks more than words can tell.

And the worst part is that I need to cancel the account shortly and know it is going to be a cluster f#$%

  13. Seostomp Says:

Had a run in with them about 5 months ago. Count me in.

  14. Tito Says:

Globat also sucks XXXX.They keep trying to bill my credit card for some hosting charges a year after I transferred some domains away from them.
Good thing I can lock my credit card from them.

In case they do a search: GLOBAT SUCKS! STAY AWAY!

  15. AdQuick Says:

I’m guessing you’re not a fan of 1&1 then? I totally agree with you on this though, they messed me around, so i’ve never been near them since.

    Phil

  16. Seostomp Says:

Globat does suck a**. Slow as hell.

  17. Brian Turner Says:

    Had a client with 1and1 for a while - the server went down - I called 1and1 support…

…I don;t think the Chinese woman at the other end knew what a website was, let alone a server.

Emergency support emails may sometimes be answered - within a couple of weeks.

Got them out, won’t touch them with a bargepole.

  18. Jojo Says:

I am a customer of their german division 1 und 1 since 2000. Had never problems, but I never needed any support and they aren´t cheap. I am only to lazy to move the hosting.

  19. john Says:

Heh - they sometimes even block the Googlebot - it uses too much bandwidth :-).

FWIW - there’s a big difference between 1&1 US and 1&1 Europe. European hosting seems to work much better.

  20. zippy Says:

    Comment Removed

Editors Note: Having a differing opinion is fine, however if you don’t have the nerve to post from a real email and not an anonymous disposable NYMS.NET (yes I do know about them) or other similar service expect to have your comment removed.

  21. brad Says:

I second that. I have a failing server (hardware problem) and the ONLY thing they will do is nuke the machine. So I switched to colo.

  22. Dsw Says:

Why didn’t you read its reviews at webhostingtalk before purchasing the plan ? , I think it does worth it.

  23. Fione Says:

The first time i’ve visited this hosting company’s site was about 2 years ago.

Then, recently in one of those business/entrepreneur magazines, they have been splashing pages of advertisements about their “Great” customer service and attractive prices…

It’s surprising to see them spending so much in trying to acquire new customers, rather than allocate some to improve customer service. At the end of the day, website owners just want to run a website that will be live, and not be bogged down with technical glitches every now and then, right?

  24. Rob Higgins Says:

Despite the 1&1-bashing here, I love 1&1 for their domain prices and features, and will probable move a couple (but not all) of my smaller sites there soon. I checked Netcraft.com and they tend to be very stable and have high bandwidth. With a company that big, I guess some people are bound to have problems, but I don’t need or expect a lot, so I should be fine. I bet ALL hosts have people who claim they suck…guess you can’t please everyone all the time.

  25. Ross Says:

1and1 is truly a horrible hosting company, their support is in the Philippines and their service is far below par, you get what you pay for.

  26. Shawn Says:

Ya’ll are right. 1and1 is truly a terible site to deal with. When you call to cancel, they say you have to use the web interface which is a joke. I called my bank and filed a claim against them. I will probably end up mailing them a cease and desist order to stop the whole process.

    IMPORTANT!!!!!

Keep every email and invoice they send you. If you don’t, your bank may not issue a credit for your account.

  27. Sue Says:

They do suck! Their customer support reps leave you wondering if you actually got an answer when you hang up. I am looking for colaborative software and someone thought 1&1 offered it. I went there only to find out it was like reading a dictionary! You don’t get to see a sample what it looks like. There’s the first sign that it sucks! Anybody know of a good task management program?

  28. Robert Says:

This is something I don’t understand. I’ve dealt with hosting companies that have made me scratch my head and wonder, “Why did you even set up shop?”

In my mind, two things make for a good hosting company. Reliability and support. You want reliability so you don’t have to think about problems. But when a problem arises, you want the support to go with it.

I’ve had similar problems with a company called MidPhase. I only chose them because of a bundled package when they partnered with Interphase Software. I had a problem once and email customer “support” at MidPhase. I basically got blamed for the problem and was told “none of our other customers have that problem.” Excuse me??

I complained, and so did many others. The result of all those squeaky wheels is that Interspire (a great company) dropped MidPhase as a hosting partner.

    Keep squeaking Gray!

    -Rob

  29. Tom Says:

Lovely. I just signed up with 1&1 for a cheap personal account so family could see some photos. Today I tried for over an hour to connect to server and kept getting weird errors. Turns out, the servers were down all morning! Next, my emails were not working at all. I verified all the settings on my end and could not find anything wrong. After a tech email, the repsonse was “we have reset your emails and they will be working in an hour”. Here it is the second with this company and I find down servers and bad emails. Of course they required a year of hosting so I’m stuck any way you look at it…

  30. peter Says:

I have had the same problems about billing. Had the account for around 30 days and cancelled because they did not include the free domain name. I was planning to re-open the account and have them repurchase the domain name as the hosting included this. But then I was sent numereous emails claiming non payment and they would take my account into collections. It took over 6 months to try to clarify that I only had the account for 30 days within their trial period. They kept insisting I needed to pay until I wrote to them that I would report them for false advertisement and fraud. They were just plain rude. I originally had the intentions to re-open the account but after this bad experience I decided to stay away. I am wondering who is behind 1and1.com? Are they some crooks or stingy people who concentrate so much on money that they forgot what customer service is about. Their prices are certainly attractive but they dont hold their promises. I think it’s time that someone look deeper into this company to protect other innocent victims.

  31. Chris Says:

I also gave them a try. My problems was that when my account was created, they actually created two. I canceled the first one and did not know about the second one until I got a collections bill. I explained to them what had happened, which was quite evident, and all they said was that they could not do anything about it. I am not a person to sue, but if someone wanted to put together a class-action suite, they could count me in on this one!!

  32. esoomllub Says:

I’m sure that account department policies don’t suck (from their management’s perspective). They probably have so many ex-clients that pay for month’s they did not use (aka post-cancellation) that the money earned is likely significant.

Just like the insurance industry… screw the client and know that the majority won’t fight back.

  33. Jason Says:

Hi, Thanks for the tip about 1&1. I was going to use them for an ecommerce site but thats out of the window now. Can you recommend any other hosting firm that DO supply good service!?

  34. skopas Says:

1&1 waht a bunch of bullc**p. I got their cheapest package just to try them out. Comes out there is no upload link any where in the friggen control panel to post your files. I call them and I get this dude that gives me the run around and continues with I have to use the website idiot builder. just crap! Go to cancel there is nothing in site for one to cancel. I had to phone them to get a affiliated cancel link. Lesson learned……..stay away.

  35. Fern Dumas Says:

First 1and1 tried to take us to collection and then , they had to give us a credit. Now 1and1 Internet took 173 of my domains off line without my consent. Domains that registered to me and paid for by me. I now registered http://1and1classactions.com
and I have my correspondence in safe keeping at http://1and1mail.blogspot.com
http://1fax.biz is where the fax I sent them is posted .
1and1 Internet where are my 173 domains ?

  36. Fern Dumas Says:

I am asking The Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to Investigate the T&C of 1and 1 ’s contract.
If you wish to see my BBB Video it is on the group page of my website http://cottagenorth.com
    http://1and1blogs.com
and http://1and1groups.com are also my portals
I have lost 173 Domains to 1and 1 Internet and am now trying to amaintain my search engine ranking with tags . If you search yahoo! for 1and1 classactions, you will find several of my broken links.Which 1and1 Internet deactivated. http://1and1classactions.com is a substitute posting blog for my communications.

  37. Dan Says:

Glad I saw this before I signed up! Leads to a question: How does a beginner who wants a web site for their business, know which of all these inexpensive hosts are any good? It’s mind-boggling just trying to sort through all the self-promotion. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

  38. one and one sucks Says:

Not only do they suck they are incompetent. They unplugged my dedicated server due to some vulnerability and then forgot. after a dozen phone calls (to some foriegn country help desk) they finally figured out it was something they did but it was too late they reimaged it without even checking to what the problem was. whats worse is after it was a reimage i ran a rootkit check and it had a rootkit. the only people with access were the 1&1 techs. I cancelled and did a bank chargeback and they are still billing me. They are definately the MOST IMCOMPETENT hosting company around. stay away if your website depends on it.

  39. Ozo Says:

They are getting on my nerve and I’m willing to file a class action if others are willing to join…
I got a phone call from collection agency eventhough I requested to close the account back on November of 2006…I’ve kept a copy of that email and I will sue their asses…we need to teach’em an American lesson…How to Do business in America !! not how to screw’em…is anyone willing to take an action !!!

  40. Julio Sepulveda Says:

So what IS a good hosting provider that has:

    SSH
    Perl
    Python
    Ruby
    cron
    procmail

I don’t need a lot of disk space, but I do need SSH (no, I’m not mixing it up with SSL. SSL would be nice too, but the main thing is SSH). So far have found he.net which is decent but has a very low disk allowance. pair.com comes close too but they kill jobs randomly based on memory usage, so for example checking email online with mutt or pine is impossible because the process gets killed immediately.

  41. bkinash Says:

It’s interesting reading all the repetitive posts saying the exact same thing. I’ve been with 1and1 for approx 4 years now, I’ve also been with a few other hosting companies at the same time. Although I will admit that their customer support is not exceptional it’s by far not the worst I’ve encountered, yes I’ve had moments of down time - I monitor with alertsite and so far they are meeting their 99.99% uptime commitiment. As for cancelling accounts, I’ve had no problem with cancelling and transferring accounts and domains. As with any offshore call center (find me one company that offers as much for so little that doesn’t use offshore call centers) you have to be calm and clear, and focus on your communication verifying all pertinent details.
I’m suspecting from what I’ve read in this thread that there are a lot of frustrated people who because they expect the world to do everything for them.

I would suggest that 1and1 is no worse and no better than any other inexpensive hosting company, and I find it sad that everyone feels the need to be focused on reinforcing the negative.

  42. Angelo Says:

Do NOT be fooled. 1and1 claims to have 24-48 hr setup time for their dedicated servers. After on hold for a LONG time, their call center tells me that it will now be “around another 7 days as I am 4th in the queue” Their false advertising would be acceptable if they accepted responsibility and acknowledged their backlog and compensated adequately.

Instead, their call center claims they can not access any supervisors and assures me that my emails to complaints@1and1 go directly to UPPER LEVEL management. So far been 3 full days without ANY kind of acknowledgment, let alone resolution.

Customer support acknowledged that they are in talks with their Marketing department and need to pull that advertisement of the 24-48hr turnaround time.

Customer Support also claimed that they do not have access to any supervisors and do not give out last names and email addresses when I asked so that I can maintain some kind of record!

I have all records of my unanswered emails but seems that I need to begin the cancellation process sooner, rather than later? I guess I must search for an alternate hosting site now.

    Yes, stay away from 1and1,!

  43. ibm cell Says:

Is 1&1 on the rocky road to ruin? I recall Registerfly really reduced its prices before it went to the wall – is there a trend in the demise of domain registration companies who shamelessly reduce their prices in an attempt to lure the unwitting and rape their credit cards? Mmm?!

“Penny wise pound stupid” - That is what it all boils down to when customers end up getting rear ended.

Hazarding a guess, for the UK at least, one could suspect 1&1 to be in breach of the trades descriptions act, falsely claiming to be and do something they are not and do not commit to doing, respectively.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I considered it standard practice of any seller on the net to acknowledge by email, at the very least, that a transaction has been undertaken for ‘X’ successful or not, especially where credit card details have been provided – I repeat… ESPECIALLY WHERE CREDIT CARD DETAILS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED!!

Surely it’s the consumers right to receive confirmation – it’s a reasonable expectation, isn’t it? That is what confidence is built on, isn’t it?

Let’s see if 1&1 dare to charge the card, not having provided anything.

But no, not 1&1, they appear to be exempt from ‘Standard Practices’.

It is generally considered that there is enough doubt and uncertainty in this world, let alone on the net, without 1&1 adding to it, leaving you wondering if indeed you’ve done the right thing by even considering them. Philippino/Cherman/Yankee doodle dandies ‘support’ [sic] centres whose only advice is that they will ‘escalate your concern within 48 hours’, not action your concern within 48 hours – the devil is in the gibberish [sic].

How difficult is it in this day and age to register a domain name for crying out loud? Not even an email to say ‘thanks for your order’ - even ‘get stuffed’ would have been a better response than nothing at all.

If 1&1 think that by doing nothing is going to achieve anything, they can only begin to go down hill from here on in.

    Another ‘Registerfly’ looming perhaps?!

So, once again, I sought Go Daddy to bail me out of what could have been a disaster with the prospect of losing a potentially valuable domain name and suffix for an extended business planned later in the year. Smooooooth as silk! Instant registration!! [Total DNS control and MX records – Available]

What on earth possessed me to even think about 1&1 in the first place, I just don’t know. Well, yes I do actually – ‘penny wise, pound stupid’, that’s me, and I’m proud to admit it – after all, realizing it prevented me from the rear ending referred to earlier.

‘One and one’ reason alone caused this message to be drafted, and that was to raise awareness of the uncertainties surrounding just the attempt to buy a simple domain name from 1&1 – I waited, and waited, and waited some more, but nothing - if they can’t perform on that front and at that level, how can anyone expect consistent reliable behaviour from them with greater, potentially mission critical and dependable aspects of hosting (large or small) at all levels, and for all people? HOW? The answer is, you can’t – So don’t.

“A principle isn’t a principle, until it costs you money”.

You have been warned! Whose reputation is more important to you, yours, or what they’ve got left of theirs?

  44. Dasher Says:

I ordered a dedicated server 2 weeks ago and I still haven’t got it. They say there is a technical problem with the setup and it will be resolved. It hasn’t been resolved in a long time. I sent several mails to complaints@1and1.com and no response. I will let you know how long it takes for them to set it up. Their FAQ says 24-48 hours for set up. Don’t believe it. It looks like 4 weeks or longer.

  45. francine Says:

I have complained and they canceled my policy! now i cannot unlock my domain name. i would be thrilled to start a class action

  46. Fern Dumas Says:

It’s Easter and My Bunny Groups are still dead at the hands of 1and1.com . 1and1 remain on the web, but as far as I am concerned I would not call what they do business. I am looking forward to the day where they rip off a few good lawyers who know the game. It is easy to say I will sue them , but let’s be realistic. They almost govern ICANN and have The State Of Pennsylvania eating out of their hands.People like OZO- comment 39. Make a lot of noise that goes nowhere. It is the voice of frustration with no return address or contact point and an invitation to join nothing. Since I got screwed by 1and1 Internet I found Chris at http://bankraid.com and http://wolf-howl.com who do a good job at achieving results in exposing 1and1 Internet for what they are.
I set up http://1and1easybutton.com and you can go there to file complaints for what it’s worth. I have been in communication with the BBB since January and it’s a back and forth game. If I quit it will show up as a case resolved in 1and1’s favour. If I keep complaining they remain with their unsatisfasctory record. I will shortly be 1 of five million complainants in my overall analysis. 1AND1 KEEP TELLING THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU that I requested to have my account closed and it is an out an out lie. What I asked them was to close the account when all the domains expired which is quite a differnet scenario.
may 1and1 get their just deserts for Easter “Brown eggs not covered with chocolate
but whith what they dish out pure crap!”
    Read Their T&C
“You waived your rights to class actions, trial by jury and to top it all your clams 2.1.7 “slang for money ”
To all who have been victimized by 1and1
    Happy Easter !
To 1and 1 I stick with numbers ,4 letter words nothing less, Eat Brown ” EGGS ” !

    By attorney) IT= 1and1…
it is aware that critical consumer websites exist and is aware of their content. No one organisation is above criticism and all companies must listen to its customers, or face the inevitable decline”
(This will be transposed to http://1and1mail.com where I keep my 1and1 correspondence.)

They pretend they listen but the truth is they do not understand . I think for them most of the Eglish Language remains to be translated by Google whom they are trying to capitalize on by having you join through them.

  48. Fern Dumas Says:

Current Events ! I received a phone call from Anne-Marie of The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office. Finally my case is closed. Conclusion: I agreed to the terms of contract of 1and 1 and I cancelled my account.-The problem with this scenario is , “Frankly ,I did not know what the terms of contract were , and secondly 1and1 INTERNET IS SAYING I CANCELED MY ACCOUNT and I am saying I did not cancel my account! My docummentation is in order and I have more than substantial proof. Today , I went to The Federal Trade Commission’s site and lodged a complaint against The Attorney General’s office in Pennsylvania, (where 1and1 incidently have their office.)previously , The Better Business Bureau sent me a letter saying if they do not hear from me , the case has satisfactorily been resolved.
You see, ICANN, Internic, The Better Business Bureau , The Attorney Generals Office, Paul La Gronde at NBC-2 all present themselves as the good guys, supporters of just causes and as Consumer Protection Organizations. Are They ?
I find I am not alone to have been ripped off by 1and1 , but all these guys try to make me feel I am a unique and a wrongful complainant. Then I go search “1and1 customer service” at Yahoo and Google and I reboost my batteries. If you want to read my stuff about The Attorney General Complaint go to my mail files at

  50. T-rev Says:

i just transferred my domain registration to 1and1 (or to whomever they contract with for that) and here’s an email i just (while in a somewhat agitated state) wrote them regarding what transpired:

thank you for your reply, but no, I only transferred my domain to your domain registrar service, i NEVER asked you to change my nameservers. when i submitted information for the transfer of my domain to your registry, you never asked what nameservers to use, so OF COURSE i expected you to use the existing nameserver settings (from whois data that i know you had because YOU SENT THE WHOIS DATA TO ME)!

BUT YOU DIDN’T! you instead directed my domain name AWAY FROM MY ACTUAL WEBSITE and instead TO some stupid placeholder page. you never told me you were going to do that. and, given that you are selling domain name registration and transfers, you would have to be complete IDIOTS if you just ASSUMED that I would assume (without your telling me!) that you would do something like that!

WHAT I AM IN CONTROL OF is FIXING what YOU BROKE, but of course my fix will only take effect after my WEBSITE AND EMAIL HAVE BEEN OFFLINE FOR one or more DAYS THANKS TO YOU putting your own nameservers in my registration.

  51. xTubALovex Says:

I’ve had experience with a ton of web hosts too: lunarpages, hostgator, 1and1, etc… and they’re all pretty much bastards when it comes to quality + reliability. Oh yeah, and don’t expect any customer support for $10 a month either.

Try saving yourself some headache. Try asking for referrals on http://www.SpeedyWord.com/. I’ve gotten a few good referrals there. Be careful about those other review sites… a lot of those reviews are paid for.

  52. Mark Excell Says:

Yep 1 and 1 suck, I had the same problems when I tried to leave. Other hosts that suck in no order include.

    http://www.namehog.net
    and
    lycos

I am currently with http://www.fasthosts.co.uk and so far they are very very good.

  53. Brent Says:

I’ve used IX Web Hosting, which seemed okay, but had a bunch of negative reviews at yourhostsucks.com and apparently is/was (don’t know if they’re still around) affiliated with featureprice. For the past three years or so I have been using Hummingbird Hosting, and while I’ve never had to deal with anyone over the phone, they’re customer service through email and their reliability seem top notch. I just ordered 6 months of the “Beginner” package at 1and1 after seeing the multiple page advertisements in every PC Magazine with ridiculously low (compared to the $18/month I’m paying at hummingbird) prices. I guess I should have checked here first, because it sounds like I might want to stick with hummingbird. But I guess for a little more than $20 for the 6 months, even if it doesn’t work out I won’t have lost much.

  54. Randy Johnson Says:

== 1and1 BANDWIDTH BLOWS == Yah 1500GB/mth try at the rates we get its closer to 100mb/mth. Thinking of 1and1.com think again!

What happened in Feb at 1and1?

We had pretty good service at 1and1 until sometime in Feb 2007 then things started going crazy. Bandwidth all but stopped! At 1and1.com we have a windows 2003 server, a managed unix server I and a hosted account.

1and1.com tweaked an enviroment variable on the managed server so that our customers could no longer reliably download updates from our website. Their fix after 10 emails back and forth passing the buck back and forth blaming everyone but themseves was to claim I did not have enough memory on my hosted server and try to get me to upgrade to a new package where I’d have to pay upgrade fees to move all of my domain names to another server TOTAL BS. So we moved all updates to our hosted account which worked fine until March then went to crap, stuff that use to download in 12 minutes now takes about 2 hours 20 minutes. YAH their bandwidth blows. Calls to technical support result in … it works great here. So we started sending emails to our customers telling them how bad 1and1 is. Were thinking of going back to yahoo.com (we need bullet proof downloads maybe even akami). I could host my server at home and get a better through put speed.

1and1 says that you can not download a file larger than the RAM memory on one of their unix managed servers. They claim they set some environment variable that pre-caches all downloads before they get downloaded. I think its BS and even more BS that the variable cannot be over ridden. But for $100 more a month I can get a machine with more memory. Although if they are true 8 people downloading a one gb file at the same time from a $400/mth enterprise II managed server will bring it to its knees. Hackers out there I think you know what to do now hint hint…

And on the 3 year account … we liked them so much we bought our servers cancled our 3 year account and they kept billing us until the credit card expired. Another scam. Sign us up for a class action and on the T&C, you sign those limited liability waivers all of the time but lawyers can always find away around them.

I just called the ccompany to ask about their webserver services and explained I was concerned about these(here) many negative comments. I don’t think I will choose this ccompany.

Since all of you are wondering why the service is so bad I will tell you just Who they are. Brace yourselves because I am going to introduce you to BIG BROTHER. If they allow this to be posted you will have your answer as to why the service is so bad. I hope every one of you know that every key stroke you make is being logged all of the time, no matter which service you use unless you are using a Ghost Service. Even then though your identity is known but if you abide within the parameters of what’s left of the US Constitution, you will be safe. Just do not be stupid enough to do more than Talk Big and Bad about certain things in this day and age. Now, on to the identity behind 1and1.

They told me my website is using too much CPU time, and I should switch to a virtual server, I have 30 days to comply. Until then, my site is on an temporary server.

So, I log in to buy a VPS.

BUT: My credit card is only valid until May 31 (about 2 weeks), so they do not accept that one.
(every store on the planet does, just 1and1 does not.)

The new (identical, same number, etc) credit card does not become valid until June 1.

Today, (after 18 days) the website was now taken offline. I guess I will have to wait until June 1.

In the beginning, 1and1 was ok. At least support questions were answered quickly and correctly. Problems started in last 6-9 months or so. The server I was on broke (intermittently). So my site was unavailable. Frequently.
Asked to be moved to another server. They said “no can do.”
I persisted. After much hair-tearing and exasperation, eventually got moved to a reliable server. No money refunded to me.
Recently tried to set up a new site for someone else. It took 45 minutes on the phone — and they still couldn’t get the name right! (Client left while i was still trying to straighten out the name with 1and1)
This was HOURS lost that day. Then they lost the order. Said it wasn’t paid for. (It was, according to credit card compnay) Hours more to straighten out their mess. Uploaded new site files. Server suddenly blocked me. They said I uploaded more than 20 times. First this was not true. Second, should make no difference. (this was the first and only upload ever for this site.) Third — and most astonishing: was told that the person — and the only person — who could “unblock” me from uploading would be unavailable for four hours!!! (I was uploading for new site to go live next day. It was already almost midnight.
First I was polite — and pleaded — then begged — then got outraged. Then threatened to pull my account — and everyone else whom I had recommended and put on their servers. Hung up on “tech support.” Voila! I was miraculously unblocked within 5 minutes. Maybe coincidence?

  63. Fern Dumas Says:

Response for Max Hodges, The Attorney Generals Office will tell you to read 1nd1’s terms of service and that you agreed to them .” You waived your rights to class actions ! “. 1and1 is a big company with a lot of small account holders upset at them. The people who are suppose to stop them just plainly do not accept the responsibility. The Better Business Bureau, The Federal Trade Commission , The Attorney Generals office , etc etc…. all have enough information to act on a multitude of complaints, and they just shuffle things around until eventually the noise goes away and a new series of complaints starts the ball rolling again. I would not be suprised if 1and1 and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office were in the same building.
I would not be suprised if they discuss our comments over lunch… read more at=

    Thay are the worst….
We have 30 domains…100’s of email accounts..
One customer has sent some spam..So they have blocked all domains and Email accounts in our business package..Then they don’t say which email account the “Spam” has come from..So we have 100’s of users without any email..
You can call their 24/7 help desk..but they can’t help..it’s the abuse or the admin department. and they dont work nights or weekends…Worse have you noticed they allways put you on hold for 3-5 mins…it’s a premium rate line, so I guess they just talk to another customer while you are clocking up a few more $$$

  68. BobB Says:

I purchased a hosting package on there website, when it wasn’t setup 24 hours later I rang and was told by the customer service (in the Philipines) to call there accounts dept. after 18 minutes on hold I was told it will take 3-4 days to setup the hosting. I used to work in a hosting company even the least automated company cen setup a hosting account in 3 days, let alone one that claims it’s the biggest. These guys can’t be the biggest, no customer would put up with that….why didn’t I remember you wrote this before I lost 3 days of my life…

  69. Earlando Says:

Being thrown in collections wrongfully and being locked out of your property are serious offenses. Also, if monies are being taken from you after cancelling an account, that is just plain theft. A collection on you credit report is very damaging these days. Even one collection is very damaging and being locked out of your domain is being locked out of your home by a landlord. That is a civil rights violation. File your complaints accordingly and the right way. I was a 1and1 customer until they double billed my for the simple submission service and they would not give me a refund. I not only cancelled my account with them but withdrew my credit card info. They tried to put me in collections, but I disputed with the collection agency and them. As what I believe to be a retaliatory act, they will not transfer my domains and have me locked out so I can’t do it myself. I am losing revenue and positioning and me personally, am not going to just lie down and take it. I am entertaining the thought of bringing criminal complaints. If anyone is in the same position as I, let me know.

  70. PocketSEO Says:

1and1 is one of the two worst hosting companies that I’ve used — the other being GoDaddy.

Don’t forget their feature “Exclusively for 1&1 customers” called “Empty Pages Parking” which means instead of sending regular Apache 404 pages, they send a page of their PPC ads on your site when a page is not found (by default).

  71. Earlando Says:

    Updated Info:

These are the people you will need to address your complaints to if you can’t get satisfaction through the usual means and for service of court process
Mr Thomas Volrath-CEO & Mr Sebastian Moser-Head Of Customer Care. I used the Pennsylvania address and the 16105601501 Fax #

I spoke with “Dan” (probably an alias) in billing today and was told by him that even though I had a 3 month payment plan, it went to a yearly because I used the “Free” software that was given away with the Business Plan. It is in the TOS is what he told me. If this is in their TOS now, they are re-writing it to suit the occasion. Record your conversations….

    I will keep you posted.

  72. pixles Says:

In my books , 1and 1 does not have Customer Care employees,
I am offended when names such as ” Mr Thomas Volrath-CEO and Sebastian Moser-Head Of Customer Care” are submitted as being a solution to a problem. I hold to my belief that they are part of the problem.
I have letters from Moser which he submitted to investigating bodies regarding my filed complaints. The letters are totaly misleading, twisted representation of the truth, meticulously prepared in an attempt to cover up their nasty dealings. If you are under the impression that management at 1and1 is the cure to your problem ,GOOD LUCK !!!

moved my site to 1and1 last week - regreting it majorly … rang them up about 6 times already and now they have lock me out of my account because they received complaints that I sent a newsletter out to people who opted in to receive it !

  77. David Garcia Says:

I guess I have been lucky. We have been using them for about 5 years and have not had any real problems. Only a few outages and those not for very long. I am expereincing one now and that had me concerned as they said all MS Hosting sites are down.. so I googled and found this site.

My experience on a shared server, so far have been good and I have alwys managed to get an english speaking tech support person at any time. It is interesting to see that not everyone seems to have had a good experience. As far as the billing problems when cancelling.. that is troublesome but I had the same problme with AOL years ago.

  78. wiedzmin Says:

Their support is clueless. Once your site is down - you may as well pack up and move hosts, they will take weeks to get back to you and there is not a chance that they will even remotely assist you in fixing the problem. Even if you know what the problem is - they are not capable of following simple instructions - they don’t even know how to access server logs to see what is causing script timeouts. Their 24/7 phone line is often “experiencing high call volume” and asks you “please call back later” and then just hangs up. Stay away from 1and1 if it’s reliability and support you’re looking for. The price is great but not worth it.

  79. Brian Says:

I have not had any problems with 1and1 - perhaps I have been lucky… I had many more problems with godaddy.

  80. Steve Perez Says:

We changed to 1and1 about a year ago for email and web hosting. Our local provider decided to pack it in and recommended 1and1, saying that his only complaint was their spam filtering. We’ve had several minor issues of short email outages here and there since then, but today looks like a major failure. 1and1’s web site and servers seems to be down. Reading these logs has made me wonder what I got into here. Can I change providers and hosting while 1and1 is down?

  81. David Says:

I have been a customer since 1999 when they were innovative and good. They have since become the most incalcitrant, least customer friendly, most incompetent hosting company on the planet. They do not answer complaints (yet they have a dedicated complaint email address), they cannot help with technical queries because they have outsourced their Tech Support to an Indian call centre where operators work off a screen. Their 0845 number costs over 30p a minute on Skype (!). They put you on hold forever and give nonsensical replies. They have the temerity to send you Quality Assessment questionnaires afterwards and they threaten you with legal action when they fail to take payment in advance for domain names you no longer need but which they deem to not have expired and therefore, as a result, charge you for them. Unless you pay all your domains go offline (including the ones you have actually paid for) rather than the ones you have not paid for.

Their blatant disregard of even basic customer service and their inability to understand that mistreating their customers is going to rebound deserves a robust customer response where we vote with our credit cards. I am moving my over 100 domains from them and, for once, I really believe this is a company that deserves to go out of business.

  82. Frank Says:

I am also a victim of their shoddy practices. Cancelled a sharepoint service within the trial period back in Nov 2004. Then got a over 700 notice from a collection agency.

1and1.com just doesn’t care I am taking them to small claims court and moving all my services to godaddy.com

  83. Fern Says:

I like Franks small claims court approach . According to the 1and1 contract everyone has a year to file a complaint. I think to initiate a class action is only wishfull thinking, however small claims court is very realistic and within reach . Notoriety for 1and1 in every small claim court , would be just as effective as a class action and would help to bring them to justice.
    TIP ROSTER

  84. Pierre Says:

We were 1and1 customers since they arrived on the market (2003). We had 2 root servers + 10 exchange hosting + sharepoint. Never a problem with them.

Early 2005, I took their free 1 year business hosting to play with. I cancelled it in July 2005.

Few weeks ago (07/2007) looking at my credit report I noticed a collection report for $30 from 1and1… that costs a bunch of points. I called 1and1 billing about these $30 - they don’t have a clue, my account has always been current. weird. I asked them to investigate…

The $30 is the famous 1 year free business hosting I supposedly never cancelled. I complained about the situation and told them that I would pay but I needed the crap removed from my credit report, they can’t do it! It depends on the collection agency for which they don’t have a name nor a phone number.

That’s ok… I signed with a local company and cancelled everything we had with 1and1 - over $500 monthly lost for a stupid $30.
I got 4 phone calls from billing, sales and an admin offering me 20% discount but the only thing I requested was a written confirmation of all cancellation which I received 3 days later.

  85. RobC Says:

Was just about to sign sign-up when I stumbled across this forum. I am changing from Dot5hosting for nearly all the same reasons so don’t go there either.

  86. Brian Pass Says:

my experience with 1and1 is very simpler to yours.

I had billing setup with paypal for 1and1 , bill was paid via paypal on the 8th of august , then 5th of this month they shutdown the site saying they did not get payment for a domain name that i had canceled back in 2005 , apparently they were still billing me for that domain.

so , i canceled my account a hired an attorney .
after the attorney called them i got a nasty email from them.

    1and1 BLOWS BIG TIME

  87. les Says:

I have been a customer of 1and1.co.uk for 3 or 4 years. In that time I have registered 30+ domains with them, spent a lot of money with them and on the whole had a pretty fault free service. HOWEVER their tech support is in the Philippines and it is unfortunately very poor.
Recently I have had to rehost 3 websites elsewhere simply because they have either mysteriously ceased to work or have gone very slow. The respose from 1and1 tech support is always to fob me off so I have found that for my sanity rehosting is the quickest and easiest solution. I have started a programme of moving all my websites from 1and1.
Perhaps one day when 1and1 lose a significant part of their customers they will take customer service seriously.

  88. JD Says:

Well, I was on a small semi-annual plan for hosting payable through my credit card. I don’t rely on it much and didn’t pay any attention to it. When my VISA credit card was renewed in July, it had a new account number, which required me to notify everyone who bills me regularly of the new account number. Because of the small amount here, I forgot to notify 1and1.com, and didn’t notice that there was no deduction from my account for the $16.76 due for the next 6 months. I received no email from the company about any problem.

When I tried to upload some files this month, I suddenly couldn’t get in. I emailed them and was told me account was frozen because of a billing problem. They walked me through updating my account number online, and I asked if this would free up my account. They then said, “No, this went to a collection agency because the bill (which they say is some $37) is outstanding over 30 days, and you have to give them your confirmation number, and they’ll straighten it out and contact us, and your account will be available within three business days.

So, I call them up and our call runs up to 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time today. Bingo, the phone call terminates at 5:00 p.m East Coast time in the middle of our conversation, so I can’t even find out what’s going on. And, I have no way of knowing if this has affected my credit report short of ordering up a report.

So, even though I didn’t get any warning of the problem, the bill is sent off to collection for an amount higher than I agreed to for service that they didn’t provide. I am so going to get their asses in a sling.

  89. Alex Says:

I’ve had an exchange account with 1and1 for about 7 months with no issues until this week. I just called their support (definitely in the Phillipines and their was no wait time) and my issue was resolved in 5 minutes. I’m pretty satisfied and you can’t beat their prices. So many haters.

  90. Brent Says:

Their billing department is a joke! They sent me an email saying my account was 3 months past due.Turns out my account info just needed to be updated. So I updated it. I was told I was not going to get charged any late fees by a member of their billing department since this was the first notification I got. However, they charged me anyway and when I gave them the detailed information of the representative I spoke with they still said”Nope, cannot refund you because it was 3 months past due”! I had no idea there was any issue till a week before. The representatives contradict each other then chooses the option that benefits them. Oh ,and I love their 2 sentence responses. They seem like they never even bother to read what you write.

  94. Gal Cohen Says:

    Hi,

I have been using 1&1 for a long time now and generaly speaking they have been ok at best. Their servers have crashed twice in 2007 already. The second time was this past Thursday and they lost my exchange calendar. They insist it is not their fault and that no data got lost. They dont let you speak to a supervisor or a real technician for that matter. As of this afternoon they have washed their hands clean of this. The last email stated:” Thank you for contacting us.

We do not offer “backups” per say. We do have rundancy in place so if a drive or something would go down the data can be restored over to the rest of the array. No data was lost due to server issues. I appologize for your troubles.” So how come all the other “techs” have been claiming that I will get my data back from the backup they will pull?!

Something HAS to be done about 1&1. The disclaimers cant stop you from starting a class action suit. I am ready for one as I have lost 3 weeks worth of billing due to their servers crashing and the non responsibility of theirs. That translates to roughly $7000 to me. And that is just one person! If interested leave a note here and we shoudl get the ball rolling.

I have recently dealt with 1and1. Heres the story, my site was going find and so was my business then all the sudden all my products just disappear. I was wondering what the heck is going on and it seemed to me like i was hacked. I call 1and1 and told them to back it up to a certain time. They said ok it will take around 24-48 hours. 72 hours later i was given a database/files that were the same exact files AFTER we were hacked. So i call in again and they said oh we made a mistake and we will fix it so i wait another 24-48 hours. But i had a feeling i should call back the next day to see whats going on. I called that day to find out that there was no dispute on file or anything on the account. Funny thing was i was transferred to a supervisor who told me that there are daily updates and your files are gone. So in conclusion i had about 7-8 days with no files no products and all my customers e-mailing me daily asking what happend and how come they can’t order. Losing me in 10’s of thousands of profits. Me and my whole team of lawyers are looking to file a claim towards 1and1 and taking them down for good. Please e-mail me your stories and what kind of information you can help provide us.

Hi, I have a whole bunch of correspondence and e-mail stored away .
I filed reports with the Better Business Bureau..With The Federal Trade Commission,
with the Pennsylvania Attorney General - Tom Corbett.
IT is all a waste of time so it seems.
1 and 1 ripped me off of 173 domains,
I have less than 1 year to take legal action and it is not worth my time.
Should you seriously take legal action against 1and 1 I would gladly
supply your attorneys with all the documentation at my disposal.
I believe that 1and 1’s contract could and should be challenged. I would like to see 1 and 1 be held accountable for all the damages they made through their service, misrepresentations and collection agency . I would very likely offer to be a witness in an action which is meant to bring 1and1 to justice and put an end to their unethical business practices . ..

Improve your grammar and change the “and” to “an” in your second sentence. This will add some credibility to your already high ranking search results as well. You are number three on Google for the search phrase 1 and 1 sucks.

“They make it impossible cancel and account, and”

    Should be;

“They make it impossible cancel and account, an “

There was a thread up on wickedfire some time ago where a member was complaining about them and a 1and1 marketing rep actually came into the thread and tried to argue the case. It was NOT pretty. I’m sure most webmasters who have been at it 5 or more years have been burned by them at some point… I know I have.

I bought 2 domains (3yr registrations) through 1and1 and paid for 6 months hosting to try them out. I went so far as to speak with an actual sales rep on the phone during the setup process to make it crystal clear that I was not going to participate in recurring billing.

The day the money went through and the sites went up I went to their recurring billing section, changed my credit card address zipcode by one number (so they could not bill it again) and filled out the billing cancellation form.

This was one of those situations that happens to all of us on occasion. I got a bug up my butt about a website. Bought it, played with it for a week and forgot about it.

A year later I decided to go back to that idea and signed up with a new host. But guess what, I can’t get to my domains. The are locked and Transfer is Prohibited. My new provider can’t move them to their dns servers without the auth code to unlock them, 1and1 says it is not their policy to give out the auth codes over the phone. Because I no longer have a hosting plan at 1and1, I cannot login to get the Auth codes for MY domans to let the new host move them.

After 3 months of on and off contact with 1and1, I have been told that I owe them $50, am in collections, and they will not unlock my domains until I pay it.

So, two domains I OWN are being held hostage by 1and1 over a hosting renew that I cancelled 6 months in advance.

I called my friend who was a current (AND HAPPY) 1and1 customer and told her to get her auth codes and get out while she still can. Although she was a paid in full ACTIVE account, it took two weeks, 10 emails and 4 phone calls to get 1and1 to stop trying to bill her. Though they did keep $8.00 for a charge of their time to help her.

For the next two years, my property (my domains) are being held captive by 1and1 and I cannot use them.

At 1and1 you can check out any time you want. But you can never leave.

All I can do is thank my lucky stars that I hadn’t followed through in that first 6 months with starting my business or 1and1 would have shut it down.

If you use 1and1…GET YOUR AUTH CODES and store them somewhere safe while you still can!

They locked my dedicated server on Saturday. Their Tech support doesn’t have any clue whats going on. F***ing idiots say that people from Germany will look into it during Monday to Friday. We are totally struck with this bastards.
